THE HAGUE--The Kingdom Council of Ministers on Tuesday morning approved the appointment of Eugene Holiday as Governor of new Country St. Maarten and Frits Goedgedrag as Governor of Country Curaçao.

Current Acting Lt. Governor Reynold Groeneveldt has been appointed as Acting Governor of Country St. Maarten, it was stated in a press release issued by the Dutch government Information Service RVD.

Both appointments are effective October 10, 2010, the date that St. Maarten and Curaçao officially attain the status of countries within the Kingdom.

18.3 per cent more cruise arrivals compared to 2009

POINTE BLANCHE--St. Maarten has seen a 18.3 per cent increase in cruise passenger arrivals from January to August compared to the same period last year, according to figures from St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies.

A total of 82,024 cruisers visited the island in August, a 107.9 per cent increase over the same month last year when 39,447 visited in 12 ship calls.

Last month, 9,556 more cruise passengers visited the island than had been projected for the month. There were 21 cruise ship calls.

THE HAGUE--The St. Maarten delegation booked success at Tuesday's Political Steering Group (PSG) meeting in The Hague. The Department of Physical Planning and Management ROB and the Department of Legal Affairs will not be placed under supervision of the Kingdom Government.

Initially the Dutch delegation led by caretaker State Secretary of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Ank Bijleveld-Schouten wanted both departments placed under the General Measure of Kingdom Government AmvRB, which guarantees tasks that Countries Curaçao and St. Maarten cannot execute fully on their own.
