Lots of action heating up in St. Maarten and around the Caribbean and with the recent cancellation of the St. Barths Triathlon, we decided to make a list of some great events to give you an excuse to escape for a weekend!

But first, we would like to focus on the local races that are happening over the next couple of weeks.

This Sunday we have the 28th Annual Fatum Loop 3K/10K Run & Walk which starts at the Fatum offices opposite Le Grand Marche on Bush Road at 6:45am on October 23rd.
Great opportunity to get your November 11th Relay Runners out there training the 3Km distance. You can register at Tri-Sport today and all day tomorrow up until 5pm.
The course for the 10K Run is from the FATUM Office down Bush Road, across the Prins Bernard Bridge which is being oh so beautified for our Queen’s arrival! REALLY!? Couldn’t they keep it maintained for us as well!?
Anyway, follow the Pond Fill Road to the roundabout at Sundial and turn right to Point Blanche (I’m really tired already!!) and head towards the new Tropical Shipping Building inside of Point Blanche. Turn around the waterstop and head back to Philipsburg, turning left over the bridge at RBTT Bank and heading up Front Street, over Link One at Great Bay Hotel, and then straight back to FATUM via the Hospital/Stadium Road.
The 8Km Walk follows the same route but instead of heading to Point Blanche, the walkers will turn right at the RBTT Bank and head up Front Street.
The 3Km Run will start at Fatum at 7am and head to Belair Hotel, past the Hospital and back to Fatum. Flat and fast.
Volunteers are always welcome so please call Rose, the organizer, at 556-7815 if you have time to get involved.
More info at Trisport.

The next biggie after FATUM is the annual Powerade Sprint Triathlon on November 6th at Plum Beach in Terres Basses.
Individuals and Teams are welcome to join us on this beautiful course! See if you can beat Emmanuel Perronet’s winning time of 1:01:47.
Wonderful prizes, a great breakfast and some great people make this a special event.
The course is the same as last year, so after the swim at Plum Beach, head out left up the hill and down Falaise des Oisseaux to the security where you will turn right and head back to Plum along the bottom road. That is a 5Km loop and the cyclists will complete it 3 times. The run is one of those same loops.
We are looking for volunteers so if you are free, please contact us!
Please note that the bike ride is really only 15Km, but feels like a 20Km due to the hill on each of the three laps!

Then, before you know it, the 24th Annual St. Maarten’s Day ‘Round the Island Relay Run has arrived!
Deadline for registering your teams is October 30th and remember that there is a cut-off at 50 teams so get your runners together and get registered.

June 19, 2011:
This Sunday, come out and join us as we challenge each other in a fun and exciting race: the FIAC Fun Kayak Relay. This involves grabbing two of your closest and most forgiving friends and forming a mixed team of three paddlers. Two at a time will head out from Kim Sha on a Double Kayak and complete a fast and safe lap in the bay. Upon your quick return to the beach, one of your team will gracefully exit the boat and exchange with the team mate waiting on the beach. This race has always been a hoot with lots of great photo ops in the paddler exchange moment!
There is only space for 30 teams, so sign up as soon as possible at Tri-Sport to make sure you get a kayak.

UPCOMING EVENT: Get your running team ready for the Semsamar Relay Run on June 26th! Teams of ten runners will start at the top of the hill to La Samanna Resort in Lowlands and finish at Le Galion Beach, with each runner completing a 3 to 4Km leg. The legs are already marked so you can start training! See the attachment for more details and contact Francois Luc at (590) 690 411 707 for any questions.

Boardwalk Triathlon June 5, 2011
The time has finally come!! This Sunday brings us the much anticipated Boardwalk Triathlon which has attracted athletes from around the Caribbean.
Just when we thought that it couldn’t get any better, updated technology will be making this event even more efficient, with Caraibes Sport Timing taking care of the splits with their Chip Timing System. We will miss Carla & Paulien who dedicated the last few years to getting us accurate and quick results, but know that they will be enjoying their Sunday at the beach for a change!!
Caraibes Sports Timing will enable us to give immediate splits and transition times, enabling us to offer prizes to the fastest Swimmers, Bikers and Runners.
We currently have both fun and serious teams looking for swimmers and runners so if you are interested in taking part, please get in touch with us and we will set you up with some compatible partners!
This year’s triathlon is being dedicated to the founder of the Triathlon Association, Malcolm Maidwell, who will be racing with us in spirit. His advice to us at every event was “Have fun and everything else will fall into place!” So, come and have some fun with us this Sunday! From the Pre Race Pasta Dinner on Saturday evening to the great breakfast buffet on Sunday after the race, to the 1 & 2Km Kids Running Race on the Boardwalk after the Triathlon, to the great prizes being offered to the finishers, it is going to be a great morning.

Tribute to Malcolm
Our founder, Malcolm Maidwell, our guru of sports and health, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at his home last Saturday.
To say that we will miss his incredibly positive personality and peaceful presence is a huge understatement. His absence has left a void like no other.

His motivation touched so many people throughout his lifetime, resulting in an outpouring of love and condolences from all corners of the world and we would like to show him our gratitude by celebrating his extraordinary life on Saturday, May 14th.

Cyclists will be meeting at the security guard entrance of Falaise des Oisseaux at 3pm, where they will be led to Malcolm’s home. His wife of 48 years, Liz, will hand over his ashes, which will then be carried via bike to the runners who will be waiting at the entrance to Port de Plaisance at 4pm. The runners will then continue with his ashes to the Kim Sha Beach, where the paddlers will take him to his final resting place, his beloved Caribbean Sea.

We’ll toast his great spirit amongst his friends who he treasured and then watch the sun set.
All of you who loved him, please feel free to join us on this special occasion.

This week’s high light is Sunday’s Splash ‘n Sprint which has moved from Mullet Bay to Plum Beach in Terres Basses. The start is at 4:00pm with registration running from 3 to 3:45pm at the start. Teams are more than welcome as are kids as this year offers a shorter 2K run distance for the little ones. Speaking of teams and little ones, my son, Kai, is looking for a swimmer. If you know of any kids looking for a runner, please contact us so that we can set them up.
The distances are: 400M Swim and 4K Run for the Adults or 2K Run for the Kids.

My fiancee and I just visited St. Maarten on a Celebrity cruise and did a kayak + snorkel shore excursion package with TriSport. The team was very professional and very helpful. They turned our first "action sports" experience into a good one. (Kayaking and snorkeling is very out of element for us.)

HIGHLY recommend these guys!

CHANGES TO UPCOMING

CHANGES TO UPCOMING EVENTS

Very important news: This Sunday’s Pic Paradis Time Trial Race has been moved to March 6th. This is to allow Dick Luttekes to heal his numerous wounds from last weekend’s fall in Oyster Pond. Yes, the slippery dip at the bottom of the hill has claimed another two victims, as Dick and Dedou Benitez tested their helmet strength against the tarmac. Happy to say that besides 20 stitches in Dick’s arm and who knows where else, and Dedou’s shoulder pain, they are well. Dedou has even been back on the bike this week!
So, back to the Time Trial, the new date of March 6th, will bring us a race to remember. This will be a Run and Ride to the top of St. Martin’s highest peak. Starting at Fort Louis, the runners will take off en masse and then a few minutes later, the mountain bikers will start in one minute increments. Who will get to the top first?!

Secondly, this Saturday’s Avenir Sportif 15Km Running Race has been canceled. The organizer, Patrick Treval, will be hosting it later on this year, so we will be sure to keep you updated.

Third change to the calendar is the XTERRA Triathlon at Le Galion on February 27th. This race is being moved to May 15th to allow for the presence of our returning XTERRA founder, Thierry Morisseau. It just wouldn’t do to hold this event without him here, so we will wait until he returns in April. The only Sunday available was May 15th, so voila, start training!

This Sunday Feb 6, 2011 is

4

This Sunday Feb 6, 2011 is our annual Triple Mini Triathlon which is always a sure bet for both beginners and experienced triathletes.
Please join us and make this an event to remember!

Please note that this is a GREEN event, which means that you are asked to bring along your own coffee mugs and breakfast bowls to avoid the use of plastic.

Full Moon and Course de

Full Moon and Course de Litoral runs: This weekend is going to be HOT!

First we’re calling all moon children to come out and join us as we run 5K or 10K in the Terres Basses area under the beautiful clear night sky on Friday evening at 7:30pm.
Last year, this event was such a hit that the Road Runners couldn’t resist hosting it once again. All the info is in the flyer below, but for those of you who can’t open it, the registration is at the Start, which is at the top of the La Samanna Hill, from 6 to 7:15pm and the entry fee is $5 per person. The 5K distance takes runners down past the La Samanna Hotel and back, while the 10K runners will continue on towards Plum Beach, up the hill and complete a loop using the lower road as well. Finish back at the Start for some ice cold beer and wine. Oh, and water too!

Then, Sunday morning finds the runners once again heading out on a wonderful race; the Course De Litoral. This 19Km off road run will start at 7am in front of the Fort Louis Marina parking lot in Marigot at Le Plongeoir restaurant.
The runners will then begin the 19 km course from the Marina at 7am heading towards Galisbay, following the trail of Pointe Arago and Anse des Peres to Friar’s Bay. Cross the beach and follow the next trail to Happy Bay where you will exit at the start of the Grand Case Beach. Follow the beach to the Airport and turn left up up up the hill coming out at the top at the Privilege Hotel, Enter the Froussard Trail (so, that’s what it’s called!) around Wilderness and on to Pinel’s parking area. Follow the coast around Cul de Sac and Mont Vernon Hotel and then hobble along Orient Beach to finish at Waikiki Restaurant.

The entry fee is €10 or 15$ per person, which includes breakfast at Waikiki after the race and a one of a kind t-shirt.

Registration will take place at Tri-Sport this Saturday, the 22nd from 11am to 3pm or at the Adidas Shop in the West Indies Mall in Marigot at any time before the race.

Don’t miss the next event, the annual Mini Triple Triathlon in Mullet Bay on February 6th.

This Sunday brings us the first of a few popular events; the 35/75/100K Road Ride. We will be leaving from the Home ‘n Tool shop next to the roundabout in Bellevue (entrance to Marigot) at 6:30am sharp. If you are late, just head towards La Samanna via Sandy Ground and you should meet us, as the route will take cyclists to Terres Basses where we will turn around at the telephone booth at La Samanna, then back through Sandy Ground, Marigot, Colebay and on to Maho where we turn around again at the roundabout and head back the same way to regroup at Home ‘n Tool for some much needed Electrolites and Gels, provided by yours truly.

And, speaking of running, have we got some hot races coming up!
First in the line up is next Friday’s Full Moon Run in Terres Basses (Lowlands). We will be meeting at the top of the La Samanna Hill at the telephone booth for a 5Km and 10Km Run under the stars.

Then we have the Course De Litoral, a 19Km off road run, two days later! The 23rd is the date to mark on your calendars for this one.
The course has been announced as the following:

We will meet at the Fort Louis Marina parking lot in Marigot in front of Le Plongeoir restaurant.

Registration will take place at Tri-Sport on Saturday, the 22nd from 11am to 3pm or at the Adidas Shop in the West Indies Mall in Marigot the week before the race.

Anguilla Paddle

Take part in Sunday’s Anguilla Run which begins at the parking lot at Pinel in French Cul de Sac and finishes at beautiful Plum Beach in Terres Basses. This approximate 16Km paddle is always a fantastic route as the down wind course takes you past the magnificent cliffs of Point Bluff and Lowlands.

Learn 2 Paddle Anguilla Channel Surfski Race
Start: 8:00am at the Pinel Parking Area in Cul de Sac
Entry Fee: $5
Registration: at the Start
Categories: Everyone is welcome but it is a long way, so not recommended for beginners
Kayaks: If you do not have your own boat, we can arrange a Single or Double plastic Ocean Kayak or an Epic Sport rental surfski.

If you’re not paddling, join Sunday’s Hike which gets underway from the Le Galion parking lot at uhhmmm, 5:55am. Yes, not one minute later!!
This is a tough hike, not suitable for beginners, but worth the effort since you will be traveling along some beautiful trails that many don’t have the opportunity to see. Make sure you have at least 2 liters of water and good shoes.

Sunday , Dec 5 - Fun Kayak Race

Hope you are all feeling up to a great paddle on Sunday because FIAC has promised us lots of fun at their Belair Beach Kayak Race this weekend.

The action begins at a very decent hour, 9:00am, so you have time to lay in a bit on Sunday morning or join the Road Runners for their early morning run, before heading out to Belair Beach.

The course is a very short triangular lap which you will complete as many times as possible in one hour. You can join as a team of two in a Double kayak or attempt it in the Single category on whichever boat you prefer. If you do not have your own kayak, you can take advantage of Tri-Sport’s ridiculously low rates of $5 per Single and $8 for the Doubles if you transport them or $25 and $29 if we take them.

Bring along the kids and enjoy some great family beach time.
If you would like to register, you can head over to Tri-Sport’s website www.trisportsxm.com and go to Registration or drop into Tri-Sport and sign up with us.
There is no entry fee, so the “economic crisis” just won’t do as an excuse this time!

Paddlers_ support Anguilla - SXM swimmers! Sunday Nov 29!

Romain and some other brave swimmers are going to swim from Anguilla to SXM this Sunday, the idea being to see how feasible a future race of this would be in the future.

Sundays paddle will have an early start (6:30 at Kimsha) so that we can meet up with the swimmers during their crossing and give them some encouragement.

The route being through the lagoon, out of Marigot Bridge, up to Grand Case and turn towards Anguilla once we have passed Creole Rock. It will probably be at least 20k which should keep the big guns happy so long they can get out of bed on time.

The swim will finish in Grand Case where I am sure coffee and croissants will be consumed in large quantities.
